thank goodness summer is here. the uncontrolable urge to eat passed last Wednesday only to have been trampled by the mandatory going away outing to Minado, a Japanese buffet out in the burbs. Seriously, I ate my first raw and cooked oysters. they were okay. Overall it wasn't even as good as West Coast chain buffet, Todai, but it wasn't as bad as I feared I could have been.

I am a staunch rebel against the supposed "Japanese Buffet". Japanese food was not meant to be consumed at a buffet, it's just not good form! Also many of the non-chain joints aren't even run by authentic Japanese. Having had excellent home cooked and restaurant food in the nippo-motherland I've been quite spoiled, and my love affair with most all Japanese restaurants abruptly came to an end in the Winter of 2000. Namely, I discovered Miyake's of Palo Alto. But I digress we weren't talking about Japanese in general, only buffets.
In Sum: Avoid all Japanese Buffets. If you have to have Japanese (in California) stick to Marina Sushi Bar on Lombard and Fillmore in SF & Mikuni's (various locations in Sacramento area)
